Discover NPArC - NRC's dynamo of an online research archive

Ottawa, ON, June 3, 2009 – As Galileo once mused, "All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them." Galileo knew, as do the researchers, collaborators and innovators of today, that if scientific research is to be useful, it must be widely available, timely and easy to access. This day of discovery has arrived with NRC's launch of its new online NRC Publications Archive, otherwise known as NPArC. This dynamic, web-based repository is entirely searchable and provides a direct gateway to thousands of NRC-authored scientific and technical publications, demonstrating the many ways NRC researchers translate science and technology into value for Canada every day.

NPArC (pronounced N-Park) houses research papers for refereed journals, peer-reviewed conferences and technical reports that NRC researchers produce each year. It also guarantees long-term access to this research — serving as a valuable resource for NRC researchers, collaborators and the public. NPArC currently includes over 35,000 publication records, including 5,000 full-text publications. Over the course of 2009, CISTI will be translating new publication abstracts into both official languages.

NPArC supports NRC's mandatory policy requiring its institutes to deposit copies of all peer-reviewed, NRC-authored publications and technical reports in a central repository. Wherever possible, access to the full text of these publications will be provided. However, the nature, timing and extent of access to individual publications or technical reports depends on a variety of legal factors, including agreements with publishers, or in the case of technical reports, the sensitivity or confidentiality of content.
